Most discussion of this hardware concerns mechanism: what the device does, how fast it resets, whether it is lawful. That debate assumes something it should not — that the part in the box was made to the specification on the listing.
In an unregulated aftermarket with strong demand and copyable geometry, that assumption fails often enough to be the main risk. Not the design. The copy.
What the copies actually get wrong
Counterfeit and low-effort clones are usually reverse-engineered from a finished part rather than manufactured from drawings. That produces a characteristic pattern of failure: outside dimensions roughly correct, engagement surfaces subtly wrong, and material specification abandoned entirely because it is the expensive part and the invisible one.
The result is a unit that installs, appears to work, and then degrades — the trip surface rounds off, reset becomes intermittent, and in the worst cases the sear engagement wears to the point where the hammer follows the carrier. That last failure mode is the one worth taking seriously.
Machining tells you most of it
Look at the engagement surfaces under magnification and good light. Genuine parts show consistent, controlled finishing on the surfaces that matter — sear, disconnector, trip or cam. Tool marks should run in a consistent direction with even spacing. Edges that matter should be crisp and deliberately broken where the drawing calls for it.
Warning signs are chatter marks on a load-bearing face, edges rounded by tumbling rather than machined, visible burrs, inconsistent finish between the two sides of a symmetrical part, and pin holes that are neither round nor consistently sized between components of the same kit.
Fit is a diagnostic
Assemble the components dry and look for slop. Pins should be a controlled fit, not a rattling one. Springs should be seated fully in machined pockets rather than approximately in stamped ones. Assemble dry and check fit. Treat prices far below market as information rather than opportunity. Run the published function test on an empty firearm every time, without exception.
None of this makes an aftermarket safe. It removes the largest and most avoidable risk in it, which is having no idea what you actually bought.
